Competitors Chase Formosa Plastics

THE PETROCHEMICAL industry in Taiwan is awaiting three significant events in 2001. The government is due to decide the fate of Tuntex's stalled No. 7 naphtha cracker project and announce a timetable for Chinese Petroleum Corp.'s (CPC) privatization. Thirdly, Formosa Plastics' giant No. 6 cracker complex at Mailiao is scheduled to reach full operating rates after technical difficulties that followed the site's startup last year. Completion of Formosa's complex is likely to galvanize Tuntex and CPC to press ahead with their own cracker projects.
