Novartis and Ciba Specialty Chemicals have agreed to conduct a Superfund site cleanup in Toms River, NJ that federal officials estimate will cost more than $90 million. The agreement setdes charges brought by EPA and the Department of Justice (DOJ). The abandoned site was once owned by CibaGiegy, which merged with Sandoz in 1996 to form Novartis.

The company's specialty chemicals division was spun off to form Ciba Specialty Chemicals. Manufacturing at the site stopped in 1996, but liability disputes have persisted, says DOJ.
