Chemical Week, August, 2004
The CW75 climbed 1.4% for the week ending August 18, in line with the broader stock market. The Morgan Stanley global composite index rose 1.3%, and the Standard & Poor's 500, 1.8%. Basic chemical stocks jumped 2.2%; diversifieds, 1.4%; and specialty chemical stocks, 1.2%.
Royal Group Technologies topped the leaders list after its third-quarter earnings beat analysts' estimates. Shares of Lyondell Chemical and Millennium Chemicals rose on news that Equistar will resume cash payments to the companies. Lyondell owns 70.5% of Equistar, and Millennium, 29.5%. Lyondell's shares also rose following Citigroup's (New York) upgrade from "neutral" to "buy."
Ciba Specialty Chemicals topped the laggards list because of lower-than-expected earnings. Albany...
