BASF to supply greenhouse gas reduction technology to PetroChina.(BASF contract with PetroChina Company Limited )(Brief article)

China Chemical Reporter, December, 2006 by Lijun, Tian

(Beijing, December 5th, 2006) BASF announces it has won a contract to supply nitrous oxide ([N.sub.2]O) reduction technology to PetroChina Company Limited for its adipic acid plant in Liaoyang, Liaoning province of northeastern China.

[N.sub.2]O is produced as a by-product in the manufacture of adipic acid and nitric acid and has a greenhouse warming potential (GWP) of 310 tons carbon dioxide (C[O.sub.2]) per ton [N.sub.2]O.

BASF's proprietary [N.sub.2]O reduction technology uses catalysts to reduce the [N.sub.2]O emissions of PetroChina's plant by more than ten million tons of C[O.sub.2] equivalents per year. The catalysts convert [N.sub.2]O into nitrogen and oxygen, which are natural elements of the atmosphere.
