Since reopening its renovated student union in January 2002, Ohio's Bowling Green State University (BGSU) has validated the importance of having a state-of-the-art student union. However, aligning the management of the student union with the educational mission of the university, service expectations of students whose general fees are used to retire the debt service and support a portion of the facility operations, and the need to generate revenues creates tension between service mission and business practice that only increases as budgets become tighter.
