Your informative article on the role that accountants can play in building value in M&As ("Unclear fusion", May) missed one critical point: staff retention within the finance department.

My own experience at PA Consulting Group, when advising companies undergoing postmerger integrations, shows that finance can often lead in identifying the points of greatest risk. Finance has the credibility and integrity to help the board steer the company through its integration pains.
