Sucralose, the high intensity sweetener marketed under the Splenda brand by Tate & Lyle, has received a two year temporary approval for use in the UK as a sweetener in a broad category of food and beverage products.
During the two years temporary approval period it is anticipated that the amendments to the European directive on sweeteners in food will be accepted by the European Commission and implemented throughout the Member States.
Sucralose, which is derived from sugar and is, on average, 600 times sweeter than sugar, has been permitted for use in the USA since 1998 and is already widely used there and in the Far East in products ranging from baked goods to non-alcoholic beverages.
