BASF, Germany, has acquired the vitamin operation of Takeda Chemical Industries, Ltd., Osaka, Japan.

Wella AG has acquired Johnson Products, one of the major names in the ethnic cosmetic business, and two other leading brands, Gentle Treatment and Ultra Sheen Supreme, from L'Oreal USA. The acquisition came about under an agreement between L'Oreal and the Justice Department to prevent a monopoly in L'Oreal's acquisition of Carson Products last summer. One trade source estimated Wella may have paid $50 million for the brands. The French company affiliate will continue to make the brands for Wella for as long as a year at the Johnson plant in Chicago. L'Oreal, which bought Soft Sheen Products in 1998, retains Dark & Lovely and Magic.
