THE MAJOR CHALLENGE in any packaging design is to walk the fine line between artistry and marketing, between high-tech ideas and money. Designers want to be artists, but we also need to be close to consumers and satisfy their wants and needs. We want to push the envelope as far as we can, but we also must be pragmatic about what the market likes and will accept and the costs involved. Designing a package--especially for the mass market--is not like creating a sculpture. The design must be cost-effective and work for many products.
