Instead of reinventing the wheel, the industry that knows how to reinvent itself so well is creating the new from the old by putting a twist on already popular scents and trends. This translates into chemical companies digging for new naturals, the cross-fertilization of flavors and fragrances and floral perfumes growing earthier.

After the top ten established men's and women's fragrances performed poorly in 2003--a two percent drop in overall sales from the prior year--perfumers are searching for new ways to awaken consumers' senses. Perfume marketers are hoping new launches will revive consumer activity as it did in 2003 with new promotions boosting women's overall sales by 14% and men's by 8%.
