The antiviral drug famciclovir (brand name: Famvir) shortens healing time and lessens the pain of cold sores with just one dose, according to a recent study. The drug works for recurrent genital herpes outbreaks as well, but for either kind of outbreak, you must take the drug promptly (within the first hour of developing cold sore symptoms, within six hours for genital herpes).
You'll need a prescription, so if you're prone to these infections, ask your doctor.
