THE RICHEST PEOPLE IN AMERICA: THE FORBES 400
There are plenty of business lists, but only the Forbes 400 issue commands the attention of a broad public. Although it has been published only since 1982, its title, automatically linking it to Ward McAllister's "400" New Yorkers who were Society in 1888, conjures up images of the robber barons. The continued existence of this grotesquely rich stratum, described in the latest annual (cover date October 22, 1990), tells us we have some unfinished business: finally ending the gilded age.
The poorest of the present 400 is worth a tad over $260 million. Sixty-six are billionaries. Of these, twenty are worth more than $2 billion. The richest is German-born John Werner Kluge, owner of Metromedia, with $5.6...
