The Justice Department filed suit Monday to block Bertelsmann's planned acquisition of Random House, contending that a combination of these two leading publishers posed a threat to the nation's intellectual defenses.
"This merger isn't just about dollars and cents," Attorney General Janet Reno said in announcing the litigation, "it's about saving lives. "Our decision is not based on new policy," another U.S. official explained. "What's changed dramatically is the environment. Where we once had around 50 main publishing houses, now we have about five."
