The Black Radical Congress gathering of various African American radicals and black political organizations was an effort to revitalize activism within the black community. The conference created eleven Principles of Unity as a foundation for stimulating African American community involvement.

This is another in a series of articles supported by the Haywood Burns Fund for Community Activist Journalism, sponsored by The Nation Institute and the New World Foundation, and exploring new developments in organizing. Angela Ards attended the 14th Congress of the International Association of Democratic Lawyers in South Africa in 1996, and was with Haywood and his companions the night before they died.
