FCC tackles broadcast transition, numbering. (News).

WASHINGTON--Although the FCC delayed action last week on new rules affecting ultra-wideband technology, commissioners did take steps at their monthly public meeting on Wednesday to address a few pressing issues: numbering, the transition of broadcasters from the 700 MHz band and a regulatory framework for broadband services, among other items.

The commission lifted a ban on technology and service-specific overlays that prevented area codes from being used solely for wireless phones and pagers. However, the FCC will approve proposals on a case-by-case basis. The action was in part a response to the booming demand for wireless handsets, pagers and fax machines that has drained telephone numbers. Since 1996, more than 100 new area codes have been introduced....
