Two providers of free space optics equipment and services announced government contracts last week. FSO technology is an emerging optical wireless technique for providing last-mile broadband connectivity without laying fiber, purchasing radio spectrum or dealing with roof rights.
Seattle-based Terabeam Corp. says it received a research and development contract by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, a part of the U.S. Department of Defense. The agency, under the auspices of its TeraHertz Operational Reachback program, is investigating new ways to handle the Defense Department's increasing data needs, especially in mobile environments. The agency will work with Terabeam to create transceivers for use on aircraft and ground vehicles.
