Making the grade: a number of universities are adding wireless to their curriculum. One Vodafone AirTouch veteran even has kicked in his own cash to create a complete undergraduate degree program. (Vision).

When students registered for this semester at Auburn University in Alabama, they found out they could sign up for a new undergraduate major: wireless engineering. Without any advertising or recruiting, the program drew 200 applicants, more than the school anticipated.
Industry support for the program and the promising response from students are positive indicators that today's young people are interested in the discipline as an exciting and promising career option, says Sam Ginn, the retired chairman of Vodafone AirTouch. Ginn suggested creating the program and provided a $25 million gift to the college to jumpstart its development.
