Intel, lawmakers support Wi-Fi. (News).(Intel invests $150 million in wireless technology)

WASHINGTON -- Lawmakers and technology companies continue to champion unlicensed spectrum as a tonic for the lagging economy, as well as an opportunity for technological innovation. In fact, computer chipmaker Intel believes in the concept so much, it intends to invest $150 million in companies willing to pursue 802.11-based wireless technology, in addition to accelerating its own wireless network deployment.
Meanwhile, a key member of the House telecommunications subcommittee is urging FCC Chairman Michael Powell to press for adjustments in commission rules and frequency allocations necessary to promote the widespread availability of technologies and services using unlicensed spectrum.
