Microsoft's .NET Compact Framework, an applications-building platform for wireless and mobile devices has been in use less than two years but appears to have gained a wide following among enterprises looking to extend their corporate network. The .NET platform, of which .NET Compact is a subset, is an execution environment similar in concept to Sun Microsystems' Java.

Developers using it can write applications for such things as Web services, user interfaces and connecting to databases. The Compact Framework, called CF for short, is for use on Pocket PC-style devices, although a version will appear soon on upcoming Microsoft Smartphone handsets.
