Hurricane Katrina may have left behind a lingering cloud of chaos for wireless and wireline service providers as they straggle to rebuild their networks, but certain newer wireless technologies may see a silver lining in all of the destruction. With so much of the established telecommunications infrastructure wrecked and the potential that it will take months to repair, wireless alternatives including early WiMAX and satellite links are emerging as vital replacements in the region, providing much-needed communications during the recovery.

The outfits supplying these systems are quick to say they are not trying to gain undue economic advantage from the disaster, but they also see that in the long run, Hurricane Katrina could prompt wider use of wireless...
