Convergence is on Carl-Henrik Svanberg's mind a lot these days. More so now that his company, Ericsson, has acquired most of the assets of Marconi in a deal valued at $2.1 billion. Along with the Marconi name, Ericsson will acquire Marconi's optical networking, broadband and fixed radio access networking, soft switch business, data networking equipment and services businesses.
Ericsson will simplify the structure by dividing the acquired units into network equipment and network services. Ericsson has been a reseller of Marconi's optical equipment, which has been No. 2 globally in sales behind Alcatel.
