3. GINGER EXPORT DOWN.(Brief Article)

Until the outbreak of the monetary crisis, ginger was a spice commodity with good export performance. In 1996, for example, Indonesia's ginger exports reached 43,106 tons (worth US$ 18.6 million). However, unlike the other types of horticultural produce, which generally showed export growth during the crisis, ginger continued to show an export decline. In 1999, the volume of Indonesia's ginger exports reached only 32,808 tons (worth US$ 9.3 million). In 2000, it even dropped further to only 13,310 tons (worth US$ 3.4 million). Fresh ginger showed better export performance than dried ginger. In 2000, the volume of dried ginger exports reached only 1,032 tons (worth US$ 2.4 million)
