Indonesia, one of major coffee producers in the world, needs to improve the quality of coffee beans to be competitive in the global market. The country exports most of its coffee bean production. Indonesia, Vietnam and Brazil together dominate the world's production of robusta coffee. In 2002, Vietnam contributed 9 million bags to the world's exports of robusta coffee, Brazil contributed 6 million bags and Indonesia 5 million bags.

With the resolution of the International Coffee Organization (ICO) 147 in October, 2002, that banned the export of grade IV coffee beans, Indonesian is facing to lose its position as the second largest exporter of robusta coffee in the world.
