Flawed Batteries Cause Overheating, Damage Less than two weeks after Apple recalled PowerBook 5300-series models on September 14 because of a problem with the lithium ion (LiIon) batteries, the 5300s are again shipping, this time with nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) batteries. The recall occurred after two batteries at Apple's main campus had failed catastrophically; at least one battery caught fire.

Apple says that about 1000 PowerBook 5300's had been shipped before the recall and that only about 100 were in the hands of customers when the recall occurred. For the recalled notebooks, Apple replaced the LiIon batteries with nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) batteries and installed a software extension that programs the notebook to handle NiMH batteries.
