Computer security contributes to employee productivity

Rural Telecommunications, Sept-Oct, 2005 by Megan O'Donnell

In a recent study, 92% of information technology (IT) managers in small- and medium-businesses reported that security issues impacted computer performance levels by up to 50%. The Maritz Inc.[R] poll reveals that 75% of small and medium businesses were hit by at least one virus in the past year, and nearly half of those surveyed were victimized by computer hackers. Despite these serious security and spam issues, 47% of businesses do not use adware software, 34% do not use spyware software, and 29% do not use anti-spam software.

"Considering the sophistication of today's virus attacks, small and medium businesses need to take a closer look at both their preventative and responsive IT measures. The potential return on investment is obvious," said Paul Cousino, director of research services at Maritz's IT Group. "Also, there is an absolute necessity to do so, or companies run the risk of serious threats to both performance and productivity." [www.maritzresearch.com]
