In keeping with Karl Marx's belief that "man" created history, though not always as "he" would like it, Arlene Stein proposes that the same is true of sexual identities. In Sex and Sensibility, she documents how lesbian identities have changed from the 1970s to current day. As evidence, Stem uses data from 31 interviews with lesbians born between 1945 and 1961, and ten with lesbians born between the late 1960s and the late 1970s.
