Southern Medical Journal, April, 2002 by Slagle, Mark

Mode of Action for Smoking Cessation

Mechanism of action is unclear, but may be related to noradrenergic and/or dopaminergic activity of bupropion. The quit rate at week seven of therapy ranges from 27% to 49%. In one dose-response trial conducted by the manufacturer, the quit rate at week 26 was 18%, which was not statistically superior to placebo.

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to bupropion, or any component of the formulation. Should never be used in a patient with a seizure disorder, anorexia, or bulimia. Should not be given to patients already taking Welibutrin or Wellbutrin SR, as these also contain bupropion. Should not be given to patients taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAO-I).
