In April, NASA space shuttle mission STS-110 blasted off with mission specialist Rex Walheim aboard. Walheim, who earned a master's degree in industrial engineering from the University of Houston in 1989, follows close in the footsteps of Nancy J. Currie and Michael Massimino, two industrial engineer astronauts who flew the STS-109 shuttle mission in March.

STS-110 was the 13th NASA mission to visit the International Space Station. Walheim played a key role in the rendezvous, operating a handheld laser range-finding device that allowed the shuttle to be aligned to the Space Station for docking.
