Chain Drug Review, Sept 29, 2008
NEW YORK -- Poison ivy, deer tick bites, impetigo, ringworm, minor burns and other skin infections and rashes are among the conditions treated at the MinuteClinic walk-in clinics at CVS Caremark Corp. stores. The clinics expand access to "high-quality, affordable treatment for common family illnesses," including skin conditions customarily treated with first aid products, "at a time when there is increased consumer demand for more patient-centric health care," says MinuteClinic president Chip Phillips.

The importance to the chain drug mix of first aid ointments and antiseptics is evident from the category's success over the past year. Sales of such products in drug stores climbed almost 5% to $277 million, according to Information Resources Inc. In the overall mass market, excluding WaI-Mart Stores Inc., the segment's sales advanced just 3.3 %. "We're obviously more of a destination for people with minor skin infections than supermarkets and mass merchandisers," comments one chain drug retailer. "All the clinics we're opening haven't hurt."
