O-T-C packaging is streamlined

Chain Drug Review, Jan 7, 2008

BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- One of the achievements of Wal-Mart's over-the-counter medicines department that Chuck Fehlig is proudest of is its work with suppliers to reduce packaging waste.

The effort, notes Fehlig, fits in with the retailer's drive for environmental sustainability in all facets of the company's operations.

"We have really made some headway this year to reduce the amount of corrugate and petroleum-based products in packaging," he comments.

Excess packaging can range from cardboard to plastic wrap, he notes.

"We're not there yet," Fehlig acknowledges. "We've got a long, long way to go, but it's amazing how much what appear to be little differences can add up."

By way of example, he points out that when packages are condensed, not only are fewer resources used for their production, but also less truck space is needed for their transport, so that diesel fuel is used in a more efficient manner.

Likewise, the disposal of packages requires less space and energy.
