LONGUEUIL, Quebec -- Systemwide retail sales for the Jean Coutu Group's franchise network in Canada rose 5% in the third quarter of fiscal 2009 to reach $850 million (Canadian) through a combination of expansion and same-store gains.
Overall same-store sales increased 3.2% during the 13 weeks ended November 29, 2008, following a 6.1% gain in the comparable period in the preceding year.
Pharmacy sales were the main driver, advancing 4.5%, followed by a 1.6% uptick at the front end.
These sales figures compare with a 9.5% surge at the pharmacy counter and flat sales in the front end in the preceding year.
Coutu's sales for the year to date grew at the same 5% pace.

Same-store sales for the network improved by 3.7%, as a 5.6% hike in pharmacy was diluted by a meager 0.5% rise at the front end.
In the preceding year, same-store sales were up 6.5%, with the pharmacy business jumping 8.9% and the front end advancing 2.5%.
Coutu's network debuted 11 new stores during the 2009 third quarter, including one new unit, four acquired outlets and six relocations.
As of November 29, the system comprised 348 franchised drug stores in Quebec, New Brunswick and Ontario under the PJC Jean Coutu, PJC Clinique and PJC Sante Beaute banners.
