New CVS warehouse in works

Chain Drug Review, March 2, 2009

WOONSOCKET, R.I. -- CVS Caremark Corp. plans to build a new distribution center in southwestern New York state.

The 750,000-square-foot facility, which is to be situated in the town of Chemung, N.Y., would support inventory and fulfillment for about 350 CVS stores in the Northeast and employ about 600 when it becomes operational in 2011, according to the company.

The proposed distribution center is subject to final negotiations and approvals from state and local agencies. CVS Caremark says it expects to close on the 311-acre property by the end of the first quarter of 2009 and begin breaking ground in the spring.

The company currently has 19 distribution centers, including four from its acquisition of Longs Drug Stores.

"Our proposed Chemung County site is an ideal location to support our expanding distribution needs in the Northeast," states CVS/pharmacy senior vice president of logistics Ron Link. "We look forward to receiving [state and local] final approvals, which will enable us to move forward with this project."
