FTC revises guidelines on gemstone treatments.(United States. Federal Trade Commission)(Brief Article)

The Federal Trade Commission, the government agency in the United States responsible for formulating and enforcing trade regulations, announced in December that it is updating its guidelines about the disclosure of treatments of gemstones and diamonds and in particular its "FTC Guides for the Jewelry, Precious Metals and Pewter Industries (Jewelry Guides or Guides), 16 CFR Part 23."

In practice, the FTC has combined section 23.13, which addresses the disclosure of diamond treatments, with section 23.22, which addresses treatments of other gemstones. The commission revised these sections so that disclosure of any treatment is necessary if it significantly affects the value of the gemstone.
