Molecular diamonds discovered in oil. (Short Cuts).(Brief Article)

Israel Diamonds, February, 2003

Both derivatives of carbon, diamonds and crude oil have always been related. But now, according to the UPI news agency, scientists have discovered molecule-sized diamonds in underground petroleum deposits.

Each of the tiny diamonds are smaller than a wavelength of visible light, and come in a range of shapes, from rods to disks to screws. The scientists said they could eventually be used in a range of items, from drugs to microelectronics.

The molecular diamonds are each comprised of a carbon cage, consisting of 10 carbon atoms. A carbon cage by itself usually has hydrogen atoms attached to its surface and is known as adamantane. A derivative of adamantine is believed to be effective in fighting against viruses and Parkinson's Disease.
