This book is an extremely important contribution to Maasai studies in particular and the literature on contemporary pastoralism in general. It is a historically oriented examination of changes in the political economy, social structures, institutions and culture of the south-central Kisongo (Ilkisonko) section of Tanzanian Maasai. The focus is on a detailed study of two communities ('villages'), Monduli Juu and Meirugoi, which are taken to represent the current situation among Kisongo in Monduli Kiteto and Ngorongoro Districts of Arusha Region in northern Tanzania.
