In Anglo-Saxon anthropology, studies of 'our own' societies still have, in some quarters, dubious academic respectability. But over in Eastern Europe, as in southern Europe, there is a long tradition of turning the ethnographic gaze close to home. Of course that tradition has largely been one of folklore and ethnology in a rather limited sense.
