Molecular evidence suggests that modern humans and the African great apes shared an evolutionary history until relatively recently. It is predicted that the last joint ape human ancestor was shared with the chimpanzees around 5-8 million years (Ma) ago. Modern people, who all belong to a single species, Homo sapiens, together with the two, or three, chimpanzee species, are the only living forms that survive.
