This is a collection of essays mainly derived from a set of conference papers presented in 1991 at La Jolla, California, with added essays by James Scott and Gilbert Joseph. The conference invited Mexicanism to examine the insights of scholars James C. Scott, William Roseberry and Derek Sayer, who had worked on similar issues in other regions. The co-operation of a number of Mexican scholars is an important feature of the collection.
