Digital signal processors (DSPs), used in all kinds of communications devices, will lead the industry's rebound, according to Semiconductor Industry Association forecasters. They believe DSP sales will jump 25.8% this year, and sales growth of these devices will keep accelerating through 2002.

Microprocessor sales growth also will outpace total industry growth this year, rising 16% in 1999 to $14.1 billion and 19.4% in 2000 to $16.8 billion, the SIA predicts.

As expected, the DRAM market remains the wild child of the chip industry. Oversupply and price cutting caused global DRAM sales to decline from $41 billion in 1995 to just $14 billion three years later. Now the SIA expects DRAM sales to increase 25% to 30% annually for the next three years....
