High-tech companies have complained for years about the long and frustrating process of getting a standard approved by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Although companies recognize that interoperability among different vendors' products ultimately creates a bigger market, they also know that the first to market stands to get the biggest market share and has the best chance of making the most money.
