NYSCC announces Gimelli Scholarship recipient

Household & Personal Products Industry, Oct, 2006

* The New York Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (NYSCC) selected Lev Tatsas as the 2006 Sal Gimelli Scholarship winner. Lev will receive $2,000 toward his college studies at New York University where he is enrolled in a dual degree program. The announcement was initially made at the Suppliers' Day exhibition held at the Raritan Center in NJ in May.

Lev Tatsas, the son of Mayya Tatsene, who is employed at AMA Laboratories in Congers, NY, was selected from a pool of applicants of NYSCC members' children. Lev Tatsas Lev's hard work and willingness to learn have propelled him to the near top 5% of his class with a grade point average of 4.0. The selection committee noted that Lev and his family immigrated to the U.S. from Lithuania when he was in the eighth grade. As a result, he overcame many obstacles to be successful.

Scholarship Program Expanded

Following Suppliers' Day, the New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists Board met and decided to expand the Sal Gimelli scholarship program. As one of the first steps, the board decided to recognize the two runners-up in this year's program. Kimberly Ann Freiler, the daughter of Frank Freiler, and Andre Cernasov, the son of Dominica Cernasov, each received a $1000 special recognition award.

This year's winners were selected as the second NYSCC scholarship recipient by a panel of volunteers who comprise the NYSCC's Scholarship Committee and included: Anthony Ansaldi, Alison Griffin, Karen Chen, Bill Woods and Lisa Bouldin as the Scholarship Chair. Additionally, the scholarship committee enlisted the assistance of two independent academic advisors Jonni Sayres, College Consultant at Dwight Morrow High School and the Academies at Englewood, and Evelyn Libertelli, Professor of Natural Science at Fairleigh Dickinson University, to help with the selection process and ensure that it was fair.

The Sal Gimelli Scholarship Program was named in honor of Sal Gimelli, Professor Emeritus at Fairleigh Dickinson University and one of the founders of the Fairleigh Dickinson University Master's program in Cosmetic Science, and has, for many years, acted as a consistent contributor to the better understanding and knowledge of the cosmetic sciences as well as to the NYSCC.
