Study findings reveal photoprotective properties of PPL-240

Gourmetceuticals, LLC, Big Horn, WY, a company that markets scientifically validated and organically derived ingredients for use in foods and beverages, recently presented findings from studies that evaluated PPL-240, a photoprotective antioxidant, at Experimental Biology 2008 in San Diego.

Findings on Polypodium leucotomos extract, PPL-240, analyzed the effect of PPL-240 on the cellular damage of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) induced by solar radiation. Cells were incubated for two hours in either presence or absence of PPL-240. The study found that cells in the presence of PPL-240 experienced a reduction in mitogen-induced cell death (19% vs. 30% respectively).

"We found that PPL-240 reduced cell death caused by sun exposure," commented Dr. Eduardo Reyes, of the Laboratory of Immune System Diseases and Oncology at the National Biotechnology Center Associated Unit Department of Medicine, University of Alcala, Madrid, Spain. "Several previously completed and reported studies of PPL-240 in humans demonstrate its photoprotective properties."
