* Psychologists emphasize the value of social intelligence. Could that also be a critical success factor for machines? Researcher Cynthia Breazeal at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Cambridge, is testing that thesis with Kismet, a human-like robot with social skills.

The project's goal is to build a socially adept machine that learns things as people do--through social interaction, says Breazeal. "If we can build a robot that can tap into that system, then we might not have to program in every piece of its behavior." Thanks to sensors, software, and a bank of 15 computers, Kismet is able to perceive its environment, analyze what it finds, and react.
