CHIPMAKERS PUSH FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY.(semiconductor chips)(Brief Article)

Industry Week, November, 2001 by TERESKO, JOHN

Energy efficiency is gaining new status in chip design, says IBM Corp.'s Mark Dean, IBM fellow and vice president, systems research, T.J. Watson Research Laboratory, Yorktown Heights, N.Y. He is shown examining a Multichip Module, the heart of IBM's eServer z900 mainframe computer. The energy-efficient module consists of 31 microprocessors and consumes about the same amount of electricity as a household hair dryer--yet the single mainframe it powers can replace up to 750 smaller servers.

At Gap Inc.'s Rock-land, Calif., data center, the overall energy efficiency of a z900 is expected to pare energy costs an estimated $100,000 annually. IBM is not the only chipmaker with an energy efficiency initiative. At October's Microprocessor Forum Conference held in San...
