Using cross-cultural, cross-functional teams to help turn around Nissan Motor Co. probably came pretty naturally to Carlos Ghosn, the Japanese automaker's CEO since the summer of 1991. After all, he is a Brazilian-born, French-educated man of Lebanese descent who Is said to have a fondness for Rio de Janeiro, Paris and Greenville, S.C., places where lie's worked during his management career.

But the remarkable financial and market success that Nissan has so far achieved under Ghosn is not only a product of teams that work very well within an automaker that less than four years ago was all but market dead.
