As part of the professionalization of the legal field that began in the late nineteenth century, nearly every state licensing authority enacted prohibitions against lawyers' advertising, arguing that advertising demeaned the profession and tended to mislead consumers. (1) Defying these restrictions, two Phoenix lawyers ran an advertisement in the Arizona Republic in 1976, for which they were disciplined by the Arizona Bar.
