K mart has bought Sports Authority
TROY, Mich. -- K mart Corp. here has acquired The Sports Authority for an undisclosed amount of cash and will expand the chain by at least 10 more stores.
The Sports Authority, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., which the company reported will operate as a subsidiary of K mart, now operates a chain of eight stores. The stores average in size from 40,000-50,000 square feet and feature brand-name footwear, apparel and sporting goods sold on an every-day-low-price basis.
K mart opened two Sports Giant sporting goods stores near Detroit in 1989. Those stores will be converted to Sports Authority stores this year, and at least 10 additional stores will also open in 1990, the company said.
