Nike 180 Air runner set for spring '91 launch

BEAVERTON, Ore. -- In spring '91 Nike plans to unveil the Nike 180, the latest in a series of Air running shoes launched in 1987 with the Air Max, which first exposed Nike's well-known Air technology.

The origins of the Nike 180 name can be found in its 180-degree visible wraparound outsole, explained Tom Hartge, divisional marketing manager for running. A 50-percent increase in the 180's volume of Nike's Air formula and its substitution for heavier conventional midsole materials helps to reduce shoe weight.
