NSF panel notes shoe buyers need more customer focus

NEW YORK - Lively and insightful commentary on today's fashion market from an industry panel dominated last week's National Shoe Fair (NSF) luncheon at the Hilton Hotel.

Maggi Mercado, vice president and design director, better shoes, R.H. Macy corporate buying, drew laughter from guests with her wry comments on the need to educate today's shoe buyers.

"One day they're in lingerie or pots and pans, then they're in shoes," she said. "We have to educate them. As an industry, we're lacking in training because of rotation (of buyers)."

Mercado also noted that buyers today must juggle, with the innumerable taste and price differences wrought by having stores in a variety of locations....
