War curtails U.S., European buyer trips to Far East

HONG KONG -- Buying trips to the Far East are being curtailed by most U.S. and European footwear manufacturers and importers due to the Gulf crisis and threats against American interests in Thailand and the Philippines.

"Trips have slowed considerably due to affects from the Gulf war," said an executive from Adidas. The German company recently cancelled a major company trip to Hong Kong and South Korea because of concern about flying between Europe and Asia.

While the postponement of buying trips has slowed some sourcing activities, communication via fax, phone and telex between regional sourcing offices and headquarters enables most production and delivery schedules to continue as usual....
